Arousing Thinking Ability in Young Minds- Homi Bhabha Exam

Homi Bhabha Exam is conducted by the Greater Bombay Science Teachers’ Association since 1981. Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidyanik Competition is held to develop observational and motor skills in young students. Students of class 6th and 9th can participate in the competition.

The medium of the Homi Bhabha Exam would be English and Marathi. The Boards that can participate are- Maharashtra SSC, CBSE, ICSE, IB, and Other State Boards. Students from all over India can participate.

Syllabus for the Exam

Mostly emphasized understanding and reasoning, and questions related to General Knowledge in Science and Science around day-to-day life.

For Class 6

  • 10% questions based on the 4th standard syllabus.
  • 20 questions based on the 5th standard syllabus.
  • 60% of questions are based on the 6th standard syllabus.
  • 10% of questions from General Knowledge in Science.

For Class 9

  • 10% questions based on the 7th standard syllabus.
  • 20 questions based on the 8th standard syllabus.
  • 60% of questions are based on the 9th standard syllabus.
  • 10% of questions from General Knowledge in Science.

Homi Bhabha Exam Fees

  • For registration of students through School- ₹ 250/-
  • For Individual Registration(students who are not able to register his/her name through school)- ₹ 400/-

Structure of the Competition

Phase I

Written Test:- This year the written exam is conducted online for all the participants. The exam consists of 100 MCQs from General Science and GK. The total marks for the exam are 100 and a time of 90 minutes is provided.

The top 7.5% of students from the written test are promoted to Phase I. The students are awarded Merit Certificates rest of the candidates are awarded Passing Certificates.

Phase II

Online Practical Exam:- For Class 6

The test is for 30 marks. There would be a total of 5 experiments for 6 marks each. The duration of the exam would be 30 minutes.

For Class 9

For class 9 the practical exam is divided into 3 categories

  • 1 experiment on Physics for 10 marks.
  • 1 experiment on Chemistry for 10 marks.
  • 10 questions each consisting of 1 mark from the subject Biology.

For the next phase, students are shortlisted and the process is- 30% marks from Phase I and marks obtained in Phase II. The top 10% of students from the merit list would be promoted to Phase III.

Phase III

Online Interview:- This phase starts with General Interview and after that Evaluation of the Action Research Project. General Interview is for 30 marks and Evaluation of Action Research Project is also for 30 marks. The duration provided for the General interview and Evaluation for Action Research Project is 5-10 minutes.

Top 10% from the merit list₹ 3000/- scholarship, Merit Certificate, and a Gold Medal.
The next 60% of candidates form the merit list₹ 2000/- scholarship, A Certificate, and Silver Medal.
Rest of the candidates₹ 1000/- Scholarship, Certificate, and Bronze Medal.

Registration Process for Homi Bhabha Exam

The registration could be done through the official website of MSTA. Schools that are registered take care of the registration on the behalf of the student.
