NTSE Examination: Eligibility Criteria And Syllabus

The full form of NTSE is the National Talent Search Exam. The NTSE examination is a scholarship program organized by the government of India. Apart from scholarship, it is a talent hunt. The full form of NTSE describes the term eventually. A matter of great pride and honor as the one is recognized as the talent of the nation.

NTSE Exam is conducted every year in two stages.

Stage-1: It is a state-level exam conducted by states.

Stage-2: It is a national-level exam conducted by NCERT.

Eligibility Criteria for NTSE

  • NTSE is an open exam for class 10th students having Indian Nationality. Also, it is not mattered whether they study in India or abroad in Class 10.
  • Students studying in India have to pass a screening test for being eligible for NTSE.
  • Students studying abroad are exempted from level-1(screening test). They will be appearing directly in level-2.

NTSE eligibility criteria Stage-1

  1. Candidates must have scored 60% of marks in Class 9. Students must be of any recognized board in the country.
  2. The Open Distance Learning (ODL) program students will only be eligible if they are below 18 years of age up to July of the test conducting year. Candidates also should not be employed.

NTSE eligibility criteria Stage 2

Students who clear Stage 1 are only eligible for Stage-2.

Scholarships in NTSE Examination

₹ 1250/month is provided to scholars for classes 11th and 12th. ₹ 2000/month is provided for graduation and higher studies by the Indian Government.

NTSE Syllabus

Syllabus for NTSE examination is based on the 9th & 10th class levels. For Stage 1, NTSE preparation should be state-wise.

For Stage 2, the preparation should be national level-wise. Students are advised to go through each and every topic. NTSE consists of multiple-choice questions which are asked from the subjects like Mathematics, Science, Social Science, English, General Knowledge, and Mental Ability syllabus.

  • The exam is conducted in offline mode only.
  • The questions are MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions).
  • 1 mark is given for every correct answer.
  • Reserved category candidates have to secure 32% marks to qualify for the test, whereas general category candidates have to secure 40% marks to qualify for the test.

NTSE Reservation Criteria
  1. 15% for students belonging to the SC category.
  2. 7.5% for students belonging to the ST category.
  3. 27% for students of the OBC category.
  4. 4% for the physically challenged group-

  • Deaf and hard of hearing.

  • 1% for persons with benchmark disabilities under clauses:

 Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and mental illness.

 Multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses in the posts identified for each disability.

How to Apply for NTSE

The National Council of Education Research and Training conducts the National Talent Search Examination every year for class 10th students.

Required Documents

  1. Recent colored photograph (Passport Size).
  2. Marksheet of class 9th.
  3. State Domicile Certificate.
  4. Caste Certificate.
  5. Disability Certificate (if applicable).

NOTE- All the documents should be signed by the Principal of the School.

How to apply for NTSE Stage 1

NTSE examination Stage 1 is a state-level exam and is conducted by various states and union territories. The candidates can get a registration form both online and offline. The offline application form can be collected from the State Liaison officer or it could be collected from their respective schools.

Offline Process

  1. Collect the Application Form.
  2. Fill up the Application Form.
  3. Payment of the registration fees is only to be done if asked.
  4. Submit the application form to the State Liaison Officer or to the school Principal.
  5. At the time of submitting the form should be attested by the School Principal.

Online Process Visit the official website. Every state has its own state-wise link criteria. For Rajasthan, you have to visit the Board of Secondary Education, Rajasthan’s website

  • Download the filled form.
  • Get it attested by the Principal.
  • Submit it to the School Principal or to the State Liaison Officer.

How to Apply for Stage 2

Candidates who are qualified in Stage 1 can directly apply for Stage 2. The student does not need to apply again.
